Yumi Ito’s “Oh Mother” was released on October 30, 2026 via enja yellowbird records.
“Oh Mother” began while Yumi Ito was reading Devdutt Pattanaik’s 7 Secrets of the Goddess. Stories of goddesses such as the Japanese sun goddess Amaterasu, and of the shift from matriarchal to patriarchal societies, led her to think about female creative power and our bond with Mother Earth.
The song returns to the earth, faces the damage people have done to it, and reaches back to the memory of a first beginning. At its heart is a plea for forgiveness, for renewal, and for the chance to start again.
“I felt that I was rising from the ashes myself,” says Yumi Ito, “leaving some things behind and making space for something new.”
“Oh Mother” was recorded by Daniel Dettwiler at Idee und Klang Studio in Basel, using vintage microphones, with her band – Alessio Cazzetta on electric guitar, Nadav Erlich on double bass and Iago Fernández on drums. Grammy-winning engineer Dave Darlington mixed and mastered it in New York.
